Leishmaniasis
Leishmaniasis, a vectorborne disease, is transmitted by sand flies and is caused by obligate intracellular protozoa belonging to the genus Leishmania. Human infection can result from over 20 species, including the L. donovani complex, comprising L. donovani and L. infantum (also known as L. chagasi in the New World); the L. mexicana complex with three main species (L. mexicana, L. amazonensis, and L. venezuelensis); L. tropica; L. major; L. aethiopica; and the subgenus Viannia, consisting of four primary species (L. [V.] braziliensis, L. [V.] guyanensis, L. [V.] panamensis, and L. [V.] peruviana). While these species are morphologically identical, they can be distinguished through isoenzyme analysis, molecular techniques, or monoclonal antibodies.
Leishmania IgG/IgM Test Kit
The Leishmania IgG/IgM Rapid Test kit is a lateral flow immunoassay designed for the simultaneous detection and differentiation of IgG and IgM antibodies specific to the subspecies of Leishmania donovani (L. donovani), the protozoans responsible for Visceral leishmaniasis. This test is intended for use with human serum, plasma, or whole blood. It serves as a screening test and is helpful in aiding the diagnosis of Visceral leishmaniasis. However, any reactive specimen obtained with the Leishmania IgG/IgM Combo Rapid Test should be confirmed using alternative testing method(s).
Advantages
-Non-invasive: The test requires only a small amount of serum or plasma, reducing the need for invasive procedures
-Wide Range of Applications: The test can be used in clinical, veterinary, and research settings
-Room Temperature Storage: The test kit can be stored at room temperature and does not require refrigeration
-Quality Assurance: The test kit is manufactured in accordance with strict quality control standards to ensure reliable and consistent results
Leishmania Test Kit FAQs
Can Malaria Test Kits be used to detect Leishmania parasites?
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a disease transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies and is caused by an intracellular protozoan parasite belonging to the Leishmania donovani complex. On the other hand, malaria is a disease transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes and is caused by an intracellular protozoan parasite of the Plasmodium species. The answer to this question would be no, as Malaria Test Kits are not designed or optimized to detect Leishmania parasites accurately. For detecting Leishmania infections, specific Leishmania test kits or diagnostic methods are required.
Is Leishmania contagious?
Leishmaniasis can be contracted through the bite of a tiny insect. When this insect bites an infected dog, it ingests the parasite, which then multiplies within the sand fly. Consequently, the sand fly’s bite becomes infectious, potentially transmitting the disease to other hosts.
