Plasma homocysteine (also known as homocysteine, Hcy) is an intermediate product in the metabolism of methionine.
Plasma homocysteine (also known as homocysteine, Hcy) is an intermediate product in the metabolism of methionine. Homocysteine was discovered by DeVgneaud in 1932 and has the structural formula HSCH2(NH2)CO2H. There are two forms of oxidized and reduced HCY in the blood plasma, and the oxidized form contains dithiogroups, including homocystine and cystine; Reduced sulfur groups, including homocysteine and cysteine. Small amounts of homocysteine are present in the normal organism, and only 2% are reduced.
